History of the Scholarship

Dr. Matthew Prophet is a pioneer of education, previously serving as the Superintendent of Portland. Under his leadership, Portland Public School District’s dropout rate was among the lowest in the nation. In 1991, he oversaw the district when the state’s economically disadvantaged students were ranked number one in the nation for basic academic skills. Dr. Prophet believes the right educational opportunities can spark an individual’s success and works to empower students to a higher level. He generously set up the Prophet Scholarship Fund to help reduce the costs of a college education for a REAP student.
